  • Glacier Lagoon - Jökulsárlón
  • Boat ride (included)
  • Diamond Beach
  • Village of Vík
  • Seljalandsfoss waterfall

The Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón, known colloquially as the Glacier lagoon, is a true wonder of nature at the foot of big Vatnajökull glacier. It formed naturally from melted water of the nearby outlet glacier, Breidamerkurjökull, and is constantly growing while big blocks of ice break of the edge of the ever shrinking glacier. The lagoon is therefor decorated with icebergs in all form, shapes and colours. The icebergs break from the glacier into the lagoon, slowly melt and drift towards the sea. Lots of wildlife can be spotted around the lagoon including seals that are often seen swimming in the lagoon or relaxing on top of a floating iceberg.

Diamond Beach

The Diamond Beach is a strip of black basalt sand located next to Glacier Lagoon. The name comes from sparkling icebergs and pieces of ice that have washed on the sand from the glacier lagoon. The contrast of the crystal ice and black sand is breathtaking and attracted photographers and nature lovers all year around.

Amphibian Boat Tour

The boat tour on Glacier Lagoon is a 30-40 min excursion that takes you amongst and in-between the icebergs. The excursion allows you to fully explore the breathtaking scenery of the Glacier Lagoon and feel the size of the elements. An English speaking guide gives you and insight into the geology and formation of the site and gives you a taste of the 1000 year old ice. You might even sail past seals sunbathing on some of the icebergs.

Village of Vík

Vík í Mýrdal is a small fishing village and is in fact the most southerly village on the island. The town only houses 300 inhabitants but despite this there are plenty of great places here for you to rest up and refuel.

This is also a great location for you to get gifts for the people waiting for you back home as there are plenty of people here selling amazing homemade gifts.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

Seljalandsfoss is a fascinating waterfall and perhaps one of the most visited waterfalls in Iceland. Its popularity is well deserved as the Seljalandsfoss waterfall houses a very special surprise, you are able to walk behind the cascade and get a tremendous view of the waterfall from behind.

The water that feeds this 60m tall waterfall originates from the (in)famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier capped volcano. just make sure to be careful as you walk along this path as it can get slippery!

Itinerary

Jökulsárlón (commonly called the Glacier Lagoon), is an interesting body of water. It connects the nearby Vatnajökull glacier with the North Atlantic Ocean. This area became a popular destination, due to the ice breaking away from the glacier and drifting out to the ocean creating a constantly changing piece of art.

Our day tour will begin with our fast and efficient pick up service. We will come to collect you from either, one of the hotels in the centre of Reykjavik or from one of the many pick up spots dotted across the city. When all our guests are aboard we will begin our drive along the southern coast of Iceland. You will pass by views of the black sand beaches, glaciers and lava fields that make up the dramatic landscape of the area.

Our first destination is the Glacier lagoon. When here you will have an opportunity to board a small boat and travel across the waters of the lagoon to see it up close and personal. Afterwards you may decide to take a walk down to the diamond beach and witness the contrast between the massive chunks of Ice and the black sands. For those who want to learn a little more about the area there is also a fantastic visitors centre that will give you all the information about the lagoon and the surrounding areas.

When our time at the lagoon comes to an end we will head back along the south coast again, but our exploration doesn’t end. There is also the village of Vik to see, a small fishing village with only 300 inhabitants. Also the amazing waterfall of Seljalandsfoss.
